Ep 18: A Brief Respite
This is where I finally decided that Poseidon needed to become the irresponsible anti-hero that his "brewksi" incident back in Epsiode 8 had first suggested. I don't think I intentionally left Poseidon out of the previous episodes. Grapple and Trailbreaker were both in need of more time in the spotlight, so I had Grapple talking to Prime while Trailbreaker was left to audition new team members during the auditions episode. When I had the goblins kidnap everyone at the end of the episode, Poseidon just happened to be the only one who wasn't there. As a result, I now had the opportunity to give him some solo attention and strong characterization while the rest of the team dealt with Phil and his goblins. That's exactly what this episode was all about.
The entire plot of this episode (if you can call it that) was based around the idea that I desperately wanted to give Poseidon a pair of boxers. I wanted to make Poseidon into the kind of guy that, in his natural state, could be found in nothing but a t-shirt and boxers, Budweiser in hand. So I created a pair of boxers for him to wear in this episode, taping tissue paper around Poseidon's bottom and using a red marker to put little polka dots on it. The effect worked well. My only regret is that it wasn't as visible as it could have been in the panels. This thing looked like real underwear up close, but so much detail is lost in the lighting and camera angles. Too bad, since there was no way to remove them without tearing them off, and it actually took a surprisingly long time to make them look convincing in the first place, so they weren't coming back in future episodes without a darned good reason. And is there ever a darned good reason for boxer shorts?
