Ep 12: Sauced
Another episode I'm particularly fond of, "Sauced" is really two episodes in one, landing great punchlines in panels three and six. Obviously, Fred and Battle Buffalo weren't going to figure out what the "Super Sizer" technology was if they'd already killed or scared away all the employees, so the "Secret Sauce" seemed like the next logical step. I suppose I could have made a gag of that and left well enough alone, but the "Aiiiiieeeee! It burns..." moment was too perfect.
In hindsight, I can honestly say I have no idea where the Designing Women idea came from. I probably felt I needed to explain where the rest of Fred's forces were, but how I came up with Designing Women is beyond me. Certainly, no one else has thought of them in a very long time. Maybe I was still on an 80s kick from the previous episode.
Designing Women became an ongoing joke with Fred's Forces, and the gag also further established the characters of, and the relationship between, Barry and Garry (the two at the computer). This is also the shot that finally leads to my using the computer as Fred's base of operations.
I believe this is the first episode in which I start experimenting with expression in word bubbles. Not only do we have the contorted "Aiiiiiieeee" bubble, but both Battle Buffalo and Fred use bold/non bold and larger and smaller lettering to emphasize changes in tone and volume.
As for sound effects, while I think the "Glug Glug" worked quite well, I've never been satisfied with the busy signal Fred gets. To this day, I'm not sure how I'd have improved that.
In hindsight, I'm also a little embarrassed that the McDonalds logo disappears and reappears randomly throughout this and the next episode. Oops.
The title of this episode is a double meaning. Battle Buffalo is Sauced because he drank the secret sauce, but "sauced" is also a way of saying "exceptionally drunk", and Battle Buffalo is probably feeling similar effects to that, half unconscious on the floor and about to puke.
Still not using a regular update schedule yet, episodes 12-14 were created and posted on January 24th.
