Ep 06: Waiting For Fredot
It occured to me around this point that Fred was the only Decepticon. I wanted him to have an entire team, but I didn't own any real Decepticons at this point (I'd sold them on ebay), so I decided to use my other Diaclone robots instead, permanantly discarding any hope of having a Goth Skywarp who gets depressed and existential. Oh well.
This was actually the first ACT episode I really enjoyed. The humor just felt dead on, with laugh out loud moments in almost every panel. I remember reading this one over and over thinking "I actually created something funny!".
It was easier to give Fred's forces distinguishable personalities, since there was no real plot to convey in this episode. All I had to do was show how each of them responded differently to the situation, while poor Fred got his butt kicked off camera.
In reality, the room in which Fred got his butt kicked is actually to the right of the room these guys are in, but I intentionally had them look the other way to make the ship seem bigger. I didn't want it to seem obvious that the playset (the Kenner Super Powers Hall of Justice) only had two rooms. It was supposed to be a large space ship, after all.
Probably the biggest problem I had here was naming the characters. The dialogue didn't really leave a natural place for them to call each other by name, and I didn't want to be corny and obvious, saying "Pull my finger, Diabattles", "Why, Gats Blocker?", etc. It wasn't until many episodes later that the middle and right hand robots became Gary and Barry. I still haven't gotten around to naming the one on the left.
The title is a spoof on "Waiting For Godot", an existentialist play by Samuel Becket, in which two utterly pointless characters sit around, waiting for Godot to show up, and wondering what they should do. It seemed perfect for the episode.
