i'm curious to know just how much of ACT was written on the fly, or if you had a general idea of where you wanted to go with things from the beginning. near as i can tell from readinf behind the madness you had certain arcs in mind but were for the most part open ended. the reason i ask is because assuming i can actually get my "armada the real story" comic going i'm not sure how far ahead i should plan script wise...

I guess I'd say I'm a planner by habit rather than choice. I never thoroughly outlined any directions for the comic, but often simply saw ideas in my head as to where I'd like them to go. On occasion, if what I saw was intricate enough, I'd scribble notes on a piece of paper and leave it by the computer for a few months (as I did for the final story arc). In general though, I've found on-the-fly flexibility to be valuable. Many of the future stories I entertained ended up being replaced by better on-the-fly ideas. If I'd clung to carefully planned plotlines, a lot of ACT would have been a very different, far less interesting comic.
That being said, I try to think at least one week ahead. Coming up with a story at the last minute is usually a bad idea. So, to sum up, vague ideas for direction and concrete plans for one or two episodes ahead. At least, that's my way.
Best of luck on your venture! Please post here when it's up, and feel free to throw more questions at me.
