Ep 34: 'N Dysguise
This is one of my all-time favorite ACT episodes for oh so many reasons. First of all, the manipulated Carson Daily photos are absolutely hysterical. Amazingly enough, even though TRL was a huge deal at the time of this episode, there were precious few photos of Carson on the set with a guest out there on the web. To have found shots that worked this amazingly well was nothing less than pure serendipity.
Secondly, the actual name of the band and episode ('N Dysguise) still cracks me up to this day. How was I the first (and, presumably, only) one to think of this?
Third, the first and last panel are just pure Fred. Throughout the course of ACT, Poseidon was the character that got the most attention, but episodes like this one still convince me that Fred was the strength of the series.
A few minor notes:
1. The TRL images are from an episode when he had Tori Amos on. You can barely make out her face on the TV screen in the first panel. Getting her out of the picture and putting Fred in was a lot of work, but it was also a lot of fun.
2. The background used in panels 2-5 really is the outside of the studio where TRL was filmed. If I recall correctly, this was the ONLY shot I could find of it. If you look closely, the Autobots are actually several feet above the ground, but I had to put them there in order to show their full bodies for the dance number.
3. To this day, I've never actually heard "It's Gonna Be Me." I have no idea whether or not I paced out the lines correctly, but there was no way I was going to listen to it in order to find out.
4. Coming up with ANY dance moves that five figures with bad articulation and a beanie baby can all do is pretty darn difficult, let alone coming up with four. I did my best...
